MPHDA Family Picnic

By Debbie Adler

Our first “Old-Fashioned Family Picnic,” on June 10, 2012, where we met our new residents and visited with old ones, was a great success. Turtle Back Rock in South Mountain Reservation, with its barbeque stands, picnic tables, and a large field for our games, contests, and relay races was a perfect site for our group.

Each family brought their own lunch, with MPHDA providing snacks, desserts, and beverages under a covered pavilion, as well as  toys for all the children, and prizes for the contest winners. MPHDA president Naoma Welk got the unofficial, (virtual) Blue Ribbon for her home-made coconut cupcakes.

Face painters turned our little munchkins into tigers, butterflies, flowers, and kittens, and the balloon animals and sculptures delighted everyone.

The hula hoop contest, field games, and relay races were great fun for kids and adults, especially the “Big Foot” relay race that had us all laughing.

It was a day to make us proud that we live in Montrose.

P.S. Plans are in the works for next year!

P.P.S. Special thanks to Board member Hilda Silverman, our official “meeter/greeter” for encouraging our new neighbors to spend the day with us, and thanks to everyone on the Board who helped make the picnic a success.
